Tonight my friends Geoff and Tim came over to help with the lesson. Having a person to help lead Jasper along, fix lines, and run the show made for the best lesson yet!

thank you! getting more sleep and a regular yoga practice is actually shedding pounds fast. five so far in just a week!

You've lost 5 pounds doing yoga? Good for you! Probably running after a dog and all those sheep and a pony too has helped as well.
Well, his ears are in the right places...pointing slightly backwards towards you when you're behind him (showing he's listening, but not far enough back that he looks pissed off or defiant), straight up when he's getting some loves. Looks like he's very happy working with you, and his attitude will straighten out as soon as you know as much as he does and he can't play friendly horse games on you anymore. He looks very happy and attached to you, which will definitely work in your favor as you two go along. Congrats!

Good stuff for getting strong (and I'm the girl that hates to exercise). There are other programs too - situps, dips, squats, etc.
That's a pony with a very kind eye and a lovely head. His overall condition looks so much better compared to when you brought him home!
Good job Jenna. Glad you are getting help and keeping at it. When working with horses it would be nice to have indoor arenas and round pens and such but doing what you can with what you have is just as good. Jasper should always respect you - so make sure when you turn him out he stops and you turn him to face you before taking off the lead line and/or halter. This way it will give you time to take a step back after you let him go in the pasture so that if he kicks up his heals you aren't in harms way.
Also because horses are prey animals (like sheep) they move away from pressure. So just like Gibson herding your flock Jasper should move away if you put pressure on. Horses should always move with you if you are walking away from their head, away from you when you walk at their rear and sideways from you from their side. Often times the invisible line it the shoulder. More books girl!
Jasper isn't a miniature horse, he's a little guy though. About 500-600 pounds and 11 hands. That is three hands short of official horse size I believe.
Some photos he looks like a great dane, but that last one you can see his true size, his back about 8 inches above my waist.
And I think you are right Kris! But I've been really changing a lot about my daily choices. Less coffee, less junkfood, more breathing, more stretching, a healthier mental lifestyle, slowing down. It is all helping.
Aren't friends great? I'm so glad after your previous posting that you had a good session with Jasper. I'm sure you'll have him moving along smoothly very soon!

Glad the lesson went well! I'm sure Jasper saw your helpers and thought "There goes the messin around!" My mare does some of the same things. She likes to push my daughter around but the moment I step into view it's like a different horse, it makes me laugh. And 14.2h is the magic number- anything below that measurement is considered a pony.
Jasper is a handsome fellow.You look right together working. I sense that Jasper may have a bit of pony sense of humor. I really cracked up at him herding the sheep that day. Won my heart for certain.
The whole procedure makes me wonder how my Grand Dad ever worked a team of Percherons? Had a huge potato farm and they were working horses. More horse than I want to work, tho' I got to pet them when I was a little tyke.

i am a bit envious; i love horses, but they act weird around me, really weird. people who know horses dont understand what the hell is going on when i am around a horse, but they know its not good. which is sad, because i am not scared of them, and would love to ride.
donkeys love me though.... go figure....

What a beautiful pony! I love the coloration! What are your plan with him? Carting? My naughty horse is "retired" mostly since he is turning 24 right quick here.
Zelda and MB nailed it. He has to respect you, your space and your authority. I am boss mare in our little herd. Period. Willow moves away from me and Spin moves away from her. That way when I say "Over" or "Back" or "Whoa" that is what I get. Respect. Herd manners.
