What a scream! I'm thinking I ought to show this to my 7th grade world geography students. By the by, I was talking to my husband (the true farmer here - he's been farming for 30 years now) and he suggested electronet fencing for your fox problem. He asked how many acres you had and I didn't know, but I'll send you an e-mail with the websites of two companies we know of.
That's hilarious!! I never looked that cute when I was milking cows...but maybe if there were dairy farmers as cute as some of those guys I'd have stayed in the dairy business! ;-)
LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!! A lesson I learned this summer while I was helping out a dairy farm at the county fairs while my children were showing heifers was: Don't mess with DAIRY WOMEN!!! They are a tough breed all their own! And I do not mean that in a bad was, In' fact it's quite respectFULLy!
LMAO- really, really great stuff...thank you to you and ashley for sharing...you can bet it's going to show up on my little Ohio blog too sometime in the future- three cheers!
Yo, we Brits got it goin' on ;) Well there's your man, Jenna, gotta get yourself a British bloke. I reckon a CAF wedding would rival next year's royal one. Bring it on.
What in the world is so macho about unweaned "men"? Breast milk is for babies - Cow's milk is for calves. Not to mention the stealing of the babies... The slaughter of the infants just to steal the nourishment intended for them. Mother's being hung upside down to have their throats slit at a fraction of their age... Meanwhile their daughters are on the rape rack so humans can suck the teat. Evolve - sexy men... real men - don't have a "harem" of slaves that secret mammary fluids for them. For that matter, neither do compassionate humans as we don't "need" cow's milk for a single thing.
I hadnt seen this either,it made me chuckle though!I live next door to a dairy farm, sadly no chaps like that here either lol. To the last comment, you know I read hundreds of blog posts and comments and articles I dont agree with.Do I snipe back at them all?no,I simply shake my head, shrug my shoulders and go do something happy instead. It makes the world a much much nicer place. If you cant say nothing nice, say nothing,is a good stick to measure by I find. GTM x x x x
@ Greentwinsmummy - I'm very certain that nothing "nice" could have been said about slavery, or lynchings, or wife-beating, or un-just wars, or child-labor, etc. So glad not everyone sticks to that rule of "saying nothing at all".
We each have a moral responsibility to speak up for the innocent who have no voice on their own - It is not my fault if you decline to do so, or do not like to hear a plea stated on their behalf.
There's nothing I've said that is not true. These cows do not wish to be "used", they do not wish their young to be stolen from their mothers and none of course wish to be killed. This means there is force and might used against them... I don't know that using unpleasant (true) words qualifies for the same comparison.
@Bea, with all due respect, this isn't the place. We're farmers here, and understand the consequences of our actions. We're fully aware of what it takes to make milk, but thanks anyway.
Bea. I raise chickens for food, eggs and meat. I chop off their heads, pluck them, and then cook them. I raise bees for the honey, garden veggies to steal their fruits and seed storage units, and I am raising lambs this spring for food as well.
This is not a vegan blog, but I was vegetarian for years myself, vegan for a while, so I understand your compassion and kindess. I just no longer feel that avoiding pain or death is better for the system as a whole. I eat local, pasture-raised animals with gusto right from my own backyard.
I saw this commercial the other night and have to say that it does make British farming look especially appealing. Having said that, my friend spent last spring lambing on a Yorkshire farm (she's a vet student) and her experience of the farmers, while wholly positive, was not as pictured. I was personally crushed. Thank you, by the way, for sharing Victorian Farm. I've just discovered that there's a spin-off, Edwardian Farm, which airs tonight. I'll let you know how it goes...
@ Bea - as it happens, Yeo Valley have incredibly good animal welfare standards. In addition, they carry out conservation work, and are a company with good all-round corporate responsability. A bit of internet research will show you this to be true. They *do* practice what they preach in this ad.
I should ad I'm not employed by them nor do I have any connections with them.
@Bea, I have to agree with the others. You have definately said some things to think about, HOWEVER, this isn't the place to bring it up. If you don't appreciate what Jenna posts, don't read it/view it/visit it.
about the video...what a riot!! I've never known a farmer into rap. Thanks for sharing! :)
Well gee - I thought the internet was a place to exchange ideas. Goodness knows I've had many carnists and supporters of animal ag visit my blog. Most often there is a spirited, intellectual debate which I invite, rather than be limited to "preaching to the choir". As blog owners we all are free to "delete" whenever we choose.
That said... I also have a small flock of rescued chickens... An orchard of fruit trees and a small veggie patch that provides for my family most of the year. I'd never, ever think of taking off the head of Eunice, Cleo, Ester, Lucy or any of the other beings that share this mutual experience of life - Especially without the "need" to do so. I've been fortunate to find enough in foods derived from non-sentient life.
But I am curious though Jenna - What "system" outweighs inflicting pain or causing death? Perhaps there is something I have not considered about this "system"? I'm certainly open to hear more.
Bea, I am also an animal. As an animal rights activist, I would like to request the same respect to me and my blog as you would to other animals. No need to make a fuss.
I don't expect you to publish this... As a matter of fact - I preferred you didn't. Just had to clarify something. You cut off the heads of chickens - And slaughter lambs for a food you don't "need". Yet you are an "animal rights activist". Aren't you stretching the meaning of words just a bit? Oh, but then again - I'm sure you think everything you do is quite "humane" --- No wonder you can use nice sounding words to mask the genuine reality. Enjoy your rose colored glasses - They suit you well.
Great video! I grew up on a dairy farm, but my brothers never rocked like that!
By the way I'm vegan for a very sound reason: it's not healthy. There are no reliable vegetable sources for vitamin B12. I found I had a vitamin B12 deficiency this spring -- it really affected my life and health in a negative way. Bea and those who have deal will others like Bea might find this article by The Vegetarian Society of interest: http://www.vegsoc.org/info/b12.html.
Enjoy the story of a young writer living in Washington County with her fancy dogs, sheep, lots of chickens, fiber & meat rabbits, geese, ducks, turkeys, a hive and a garden. Expect to hear a lot about mountain music, the civil war, local food, and my friends along the way. It's a big time folks.

Brilliant! Yeah, Jenna, one of those guys might be just the one for you! Farmer's rule! (and I'm a non-milk drinker)
The Brits have just beat our superbowl ads to pieces! This is GREAT!
I love milk.

Darling, I meant you. If you are an animal rights activist, then please treat me (also an animal) with respect and courtesy.
Wow!

This is Classic! Why can't we have commercials like this in the US? I have a hankering for some Yeo Valley now :)
